Zinc roofing is not a popular option in the US, but in Europe approximately 70% of residential construction has zinc roofing—and for good reason. Unlike steel, zinc roofing doesn’t need a protective coating. Zinc forms its own protective patina over time. It can also be painted. Scratches won’t damage it, in fact, zinc has a unique ability to “heal” itself such that scratches or blemishes disappear. Zinc roofing can easily last 50 to even 100 years, and the cost per square foot is significantly less than other types of metal roofing.
